Qolsys IQ Panel 2 — Z-Wave Management Guide

The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 includes a built-in Z-Wave controller. When swapping panels, existing Z-Wave devices must be deleted from the old controller and re-added to the new one.

Z-Wave Overview

Local Z-Wave control is available by default; no extra setting is required to communicate via Z-Wave. For remote functionality through Alarm.com, the customer account must include automation on the service package (contact True Protection if you need this added).

Compatible Z-Wave Features

Feature Compatibility
Local Network Rediscovery All versions
Remote Rediscovery All versions
Node Neighbors All versions
Link Quality Indicator (LQI) Panels v2.4.0+
Remote Add/Delete All versions
Self-Healing Network All versions
Network Wide Inclusion All versions
Z-Wave Plus Incompatible
Z-Wave Security 2 (S2) Panels manufactured on v2.4.2+*
SmartStart Panel firmware v2.6.0**

* Panels merely upgraded to 2.4.2 are not S2 compatible; they must have shipped with ≥2.4.2 (Z-Wave 6.81.03) at manufacture.
** SmartStart may require panels manufactured on ≥2.4.2 as well.

Local Z-Wave Device Limits

Device Type Default Maximum
Thermostats 3 6 (10 with v2.3.0+)
Lights 5 80
Smart sockets 5 15
Door locks 3 6 (20 with v2.3.0+)
Garage door openers 3 6
Other Z-Wave devices 5 21

Note: Default limits are lower than maximums. Increase per-type limits in panel programming if needed (see steps below).

Adjust Allowed Device Counts (Panel)

  1. Swipe down → SettingsAdvanced Settings (enter installer code).
  2. InstallationDevicesZ-Wave DevicesZ-Wave Settings.
  3. Edit the per-category device limits and save.

Enroll Z-Wave Devices

A Z-Wave network is formed by putting the controller (panel) into Add/Include mode and triggering each device to join.

Best Practices

  • Place devices in their final locations before inclusion so routes are accurate.
  • Add closest devices first, then move outward (repeaters help extend range).
  • Verify each inclusion succeeds before moving on.
  • After all devices are added, run a Network Rediscovery.

Enroll via Panel

  1. Swipe down → SettingsAdvanced Settings → enter installer code.
  2. InstallationDevicesZ-Wave DevicesAdd DeviceInclude.
  3. Trigger the Z-Wave device; the panel beeps when added.
  4. Re-enter Include mode for each additional device.

Enroll via Remote Tools

From Alarm.com’s dealer tools (Partner Portal or MobileTech), use Z-Wave Devices → Add Z-Wave Device and follow on-screen prompts. Panel must be v1.6.1+ for Remote Add/Delete.

Remove / Exclude Z-Wave Devices

To erase a device’s previous network data or remove it from this network:

Exclude via Panel

  1. Swipe down → SettingsAdvanced Settings → installer code.
  2. InstallationDevicesZ-Wave DevicesClear Device (exclusion mode).
  3. Trigger the device; the panel beeps when cleared.

Exclude via Remote Tools

Use Partner Portal / MobileTech → Z-Wave DevicesDelete Z-Wave Devices. For failed/inoperable nodes, use Remove Failed Device (IQ Panel 2 requires v2.5.0+ for remote failed-node removal).

Troubleshooting Removal

  • Move the device closer to the panel and retry.
  • Ensure device has full power (fresh batteries or AC).
  • Power cycle both the device and the panel, then re-attempt exclusion.

Run a Network Rediscovery

After adding devices, perform a rediscovery to optimize routes (avoid using Z-Wave during this process):

Panel

  1. Swipe down → SettingsAdvanced Settings → installer code.
  2. System TestsZ-Wave TestsRediscover Network.

Remote Tools

Partner Portal / MobileTech → Z-Wave DevicesRediscover Network. Check event history to confirm commands process.

Z-Wave Troubleshooting

  • Won’t include: Perform an exclusion first, then include. Verify device is in final location and powered.
  • Inconsistent operation: Run rediscovery; add repeaters (AC-powered Z-Wave devices) between panel and far nodes.
  • Not deleting: Move closer to the panel, verify power, use Remove Failed Device if inoperable.
