Alarm.com Smart Thermostat Troubleshooting Guide
The Alarm.com Smart Thermostat is designed for reliability and comfort, but occasionally issues may occur. If your thermostat is not controlling the HVAC system properly, use the following troubleshooting guide before contacting an HVAC professional.
Common Issues
- Thermostat is not turning on heat or AC
- Thermostat only controls heat or AC but not both
- Heat or AC runs continuously when it should not
Note: For non-Alarm.com thermostats, please contact the device manufacturer for configuration support.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Verify Communication
Ensure that the thermostat is properly connected to your Z-Wave network. Poor communication can prevent accurate control of HVAC functions.
2. Check Wiring
Incorrect wiring is one of the most common causes of thermostat issues. Review connections carefully or see the Alarm.com Smart Thermostat Wiring & Configuration Guide.
3. Confirm Power to HVAC Components
Verify that power has been restored to all HVAC system components (furnace, compressor, fan, etc.) after installation.
4. Allow Compressor Delay
By default, the thermostat has a 5-minute compressor delay to protect the HVAC system when switching between heat and cool modes. Wait the full time before assuming the system isn’t responding.
5. Verify Configuration Settings
The thermostat must be configured correctly for the type of HVAC system in use. Common configuration errors include:
- Heat pump configured as a standard system
- Incorrect fuel source setting (electric vs. gas)
- Improper stage support (1-stage vs. multi-stage)
To verify via the Partner Portal:
- Log into the Partner Portal.
- Find the customer account.
- Click Equipment > Z-Wave Devices.
- Locate the thermostat in the list and expand the details.
- Click Device Commands > Configure Device to review and adjust settings.
6. Check for Hardware Issues
If none of the above resolves the problem, the issue may be related to a hardware failure in the thermostat or HVAC system (e.g., a bad fuse, faulty compressor, or wiring short). In this case, contact a licensed HVAC professional.
