How to Enroll Z-Wave Locks with Secure Communication

Z-Wave locks use encrypted communication over Z-Wave technology, ensuring complete security. Because of this added security, the lock and the controller must exchange additional Z-Wave commands during setup. Each extra command introduces more opportunities for a communication breakdown, so following proper installation steps is critical.

Important Note

Do not add or delete user codes locally on the lock. Always use the Alarm.com web interface for user code management to maintain secure communication and proper syncing.

Best Practices for Secure Enrollment

  1. Start with the lock placed within 6 feet of the panel or module.
  2. Delete the lock from the Z-Wave network if it was previously enrolled.
  3. Place the panel into Add Mode and trigger the lock.
  4. Wait at least two minutes before locally operating the device.
  5. Verify the lock appears in the Alarm.com account and responds to lock/unlock commands.
  6. Move the lock to its final installation location.
  7. Run a Network Rediscovery to update communication paths.
