Alarm.com Automation Rules Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

Step-by-step solutions to get your Z-Wave automations back online and running smoothly.

Common reasons automation rules may fail

  • Z-Wave device is offline. If the device can’t talk to the Z-Wave network, the rule won’t trigger. Check for alerts under Alerts & Issues on the Customer Website or under Z-Wave Devices in the Partner Portal.
  • Rule is not set up correctly. Confirm your rules in the Automation → Rules section of the Customer Website. Look for paused or incomplete rules.
  • Conflicting rules. Example: one rule turns a light ON when the system disarms, and another turns it OFF under the same condition. Contradictions cancel out the automation.
  • Rule not saved properly. Sometimes the rule doesn’t sync. A reset may be required.

How to fix automation rule issues

  1. Reboot the system or perform a Hard Reset.
  2. Wait for the system to fully reboot.
  3. Delete and recreate the rule.
  4. Sign out of the Customer Website or mobile app and sign back in to re-sync.

Tip: Always check that your Z-Wave devices are online and communicating before troubleshooting rules.

Need extra help?

If automation still isn’t working after these steps, your system may need professional servicing or deeper Z-Wave diagnostics.
