How to Set Up Video Analytics for Alarm.com Doorbell Cameras

Video Analytics for Alarm.com doorbell cameras is optimized to identify people at your door and send immediate notifications. This guide explains requirements, placement, setup, and advanced features like light automation and touchless doorbell mode.

Requirements

  • A service package that supports Video Analytics
  • At least one ADC-VDB770 enrolled on the account

Camera Setup and Placement

Position

Install the ADC-VDB770 upright in the standard doorbell position, typically 40–44 inches (101.6–111.76 cm) from the ground.

Angle

Use the included angled mounting brackets to adjust for obstacles or coverage needs. See mounting bracket support for details.

Distance

Video Analytics is optimized to detect people within 10 feet, but may detect further depending on angle, size, and sensitivity settings.

Chime Type

Ensure the correct chime type is selected for accurate operation. For details, see Adjusting chime type for ADC-VDB770.

Create a Video Analytics Rule

Note: Only one recording rule can be created per doorbell camera.

Using the Customer Website

  1. Log into the Customer Website.
  2. Click VideoRecording Rules+ Add New Rule.
  3. Select Video Analytics and choose the doorbell camera.

Using the Customer App

  1. Log into the Customer app.
  2. Tap VideoRecording Rules+ Add New Rule.
  3. Select Video Analytics and choose the doorbell camera.

Using the MobileTech App

  1. Log into MobileTech and locate the customer account.
  2. Tap EquipmentVideo Devices.
  3. Select the doorbell camera → Configure Video DeviceSet up Analytics Rule.
  4. Send a communication test from the panel to enable access. (For accounts without a panel, use the Customer Website or app.)

Configuring the Rule

Trigger Settings

  • Enter a descriptive Rule Name.
  • Adjust the ground zone by dragging the shape to cover only the area where a person’s feet will be.
  • Use the Detection Sensitivity slider to set sensitivity.

Schedule Settings

  • Choose the Minimum Delay Between Clips to prevent constant triggering.
  • Set the rule to run At all times or Only during the following times (days/hours can be customized).
  • Add exceptions like Panel Armed Away or Geo-Device Inside.

Notification Settings

Select notification recipients. Push notifications with thumbnails to mobile devices are recommended for fast awareness.

Light Automation

If the account supports Z-Wave light devices, automation rules can be tied to analytics triggers.

  • Choose lights to turn on and set duration.
  • Define time frames (all times, scheduled, or only after sunset).

Touchless Doorbell

  • Enable the Touchless Doorbell toggle.
  • Define the area of interest where a guest standing will trigger the doorbell.
  • Set the Duration Inside Area to determine how long they must remain before activation.

Note: Notifications appear as button press events when Touchless Doorbell is used.
