Is there a recommended Wi-Fi extender for the SkyBell Doorbell Camera?

Alarm.com recommends using the Netgear WN3000RP Wi-Fi extender with the SkyBell Doorbell Camera. For more information about installing the WN3000RP, refer to Netgear's Universal WiFi Range Extender WN3000RP Installation Guide.

Functionality includes:

  • This Wi-Fi extender broadcasts a unique SSID by default (e.g., NetworkName_ext) and typically uses the same password as the main Wi-Fi network.
  • Once the Wi-Fi extender is configured, the camera can be connected to the Wi-Fi extender's SSID.

After enrolling the SkyBell Doorbell Camera to an extender, physically power cycle the device (remove from wall, wait 60 seconds) to verify that there is a good network connection.

Note: Since the SkyBell Doorbell Camera does not support WPS, the Netgear PowerLine Extender (PLC) does not work with the SkyBell Doorbell Camera. The PLC's SSID is also hidden.

Range extender requirements

If using a different range extender than the recommended one, verify it meets the following requirements:

  • The SkyBell Doorbell Camera does not support hidden SSIDs, so the extender must broadcast a visible network.
  • Verify the extender uses a unique SSID (e.g., NetworkName_ext) from the router's main wireless network. The SkyBell Doorbell Camera may experience issues if the extender has the same SSID as the customer's router since it may bounce between using the two networks.
